Lots of things are happening all over the board in this episode! A portrait is painted, the Independence Inn owner shows up, Jess is involved in a fake crime, and Emily basically has a showdown. All events are laced with humor, of course, but much is realized emotionally during the course of the episode.
I love the end result of Rory’s portrait, although it’s curious to me why it was part of this episode. Maybe just to juxtapose Rory and Emily’s relationship with Lorelai and Emily’s.
The most hilarious part is absolutely Fran. We are all very excited that Sookie and Lorelai want to take a leap to own their own inn, but the Fran interaction really bursts their bubble. It made me laugh out loud that Fran would not entertain the idea of her death and thus would never sell her family’s old inn.
The second humorous happening is obviously Jess creating a fake chalk outline of a body in front of Taylor’s market, even if he does get reemed by Rory for doing it.
I think the real meat of this episode is Mia and the feeling of home she brings for our Gilmore girls. We see a dramatic difference between Lorelai’s attitude towards Mia and towards her mother. I also really like this Mia. (Later in the series we see another actress in the role and I think she plays the character totally different and also appears to be younger.) This Mia is sweet and fun loving. The showdown between Mia and Emily makes me uncomfortable. They both have valid points on the situation Lorelai was in as a teenage mother. Still, who’s side to be on?
In his episode, Lorelai has second thoughts about leaving the Independence Inn because she views it as her home-home. I think this sentiment is mirrored in Fran’s reluctance to give up ownership of her own parents Inn. Deep thoughts.
