Gilmore Girls Musings

S2:E1 Sadie, Sadie…

Season 2 time!

The very first thing I have never noticed in this episode was the quick moment that the camera slides over the Kim’s business sign. All through the series I hear people commenting on Kim’s Antiques, when all the while it should’ve been Kim’s Art & Antiques! Who knew? Someone who saw the sign knew, and it certainly wasn’t me. I have never seen artwork in this establishment either. There must be some old paintings hanging around somewhere.

Also, this is the first time we see the staircase in the Gilmore house. And, hello! French doors to terrace that used to be a window! Emily must have done some serious redecorating between seasons.

Finally, I am beginning my Lorelai in glasses count: 1

S1:E21 Love, Daisies and Troubadours

The first couple of times I watched this episode, I kept thinking that Lorelai was sleepwalking and dreaming that Luke was repairing things at her house. I guess it was because in the first scene, after she finds Luke fixing something on her porch, Babette and Rory seem like they are just humoring her to get her to go back to bed. This idea was also reinforced by a discussion Lorelai and Rory have about their dreams later in the episode.

Of course, my theory is squashed when Rachel points out that Luke has been at Lorelai’s house repeatedly.

I don’t know why I fixate on this part of the episode when clearly, Max and the daisies are the draw.

S1:E20 P.S. I Love

Health conscious Luke has a tobacco ad on the wall of his business?! I do think he is most overtly health and environmentally conscious in the first season. I can only assume the poster is left over from his father’s hardware store.

S1:E19 Emily in Wonderland

This episode gives us our first look at the Dragonfly Inn. I’m sure there are other things to note about this episode, but what really hit me was Sookie’s reference to making the Dragonfly a bed and breakfast. In many episodes, we hear Lorelai’s dislike for those kinds of establishments and I’m just surprised Sookie doesn’t know that about her best friend.

S1:E18 The Third Lorelai

If Gran/ Lorelai the 1st/ “Trix” is 80 years old according to Lorelai II in this episode (is it the year 2000 or 2001?) then I would assume she was born around 1920. This makes me wonder about her Gibson Girl inspired look: hair piled high on her head and the high necklines. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. Maybe Gran is over 80.

Other notes: Lorelai II seems to really enjoy the white wine in this season. I wonder when she switches to the martini with a twist.

S1:E17 The Breakup, Part II

The big question is HOW IS LANE KIM AT THIS PARTY? Lane could not attend a Bangles concert with adults. Lane could not go on a date! What did she tell Mrs. Kim? Did Lorelai finally lie to Mrs. Kim for Lane because Rory was sad and she wanted Lane to go with Rory? How did it happen?

S1:E16 Star-Crossed Lovers and Other Strangers

In this episode, Rory and Dean have their 3 month anniversary (that concept is strange enough) and they also break up. But really, having already seen the series a few times, there are all kinds of little things that jump out at me.

First of all, the changes in Richard and Emily’s house disturb me. In the first season, we see their house with a lot of white paint and some of the doorways appear to change in the future. The dining room, for instance has a wall across from Loralei (where Rory normally sits, but not in this episode) that just vanishes in future seasons. It also transforms from a white room to a wood paneled room later. Also, the sitting room where they always have drinks later develops a staircase in future seasons. Did Richard and Emily move to a new house and I missed it? No! Lorelai grew up in this house!

There are additional questions that plague me by episode 16. We see Harry, the mayor of Stars Hollow during Season 1, but where the heck does he go? Near the end of the series, we see Taylor in charge of the town as Town Selectsman, is there suddenly no mayor? Is this a town or a village? What are the zoning rules that allow for a mayor? Confusion has me. Moreover, what is Miss Patty’s official role in the town? When I see a podium, I typically see Miss Patty nearby.

Rachel’s presence in Stars Hollow makes me wonder when did Luke begin dating Anna and conceiving that April Nardini. Was it before or after Rachel? There is too much math on this one. I’ll have to pay attention to April’s birthday when I get near the end of the series.

I have also noted Lorelai’s Duran Duran poster is still on her bedroom door in this episode. I like to think it is sweet that they kept her room the same even after she left home.

Even through all these thoughts, the real question in the episode is where is Rory stowing her New Yorker magazine? Dean asks her what reading materials she brought. I am skeptical that she has anything at all with her except for a suspiciously empty-looking, hot pink purse. Where is the magazine? Aren’t those 8 1/2 x 11 inches?

S1:E15 Christopher Returns

I love this episode because Christopher comes across as a sexy, motorcycle riding, seemingly carefree fellow with his heart on his sleeve. We also get to see that although he is so cool, he also doesn’t quite have his life together. I don’t know the price of the Oxford English Dictionary, but obviously it was too steep for Christopher’s lifestyle.

However excited I am to see Christopher, my query is again related to Dean. A few episodes ago, Lorelai tells Dean that Rory’s not going to be riding his motorcycle and Dean responds with, “I don’t have a motorcycle.” Episode 15 begs to differ. When Dean and Christopher meet, he reveals that he in fact does have a motorcycle, an ’86 Suzuki no less! I would say it doesn’t really compare to Christopher’s Indian, but what do I know about motorcycles?

Was Dean holding out on Lorelai episodes ago? Or did her rule prompt him to seek out a two-wheeled death machine of his own?

This episode is also the beginning of my dreams of Christopher and Lorelai getting together for real. I do like Luke though, but like Lorelai, my feelings on the matter wax and wane throughout the series.
